Getting Started
Hi there, I’m a Random NorCal Dude who is starting to take up gardening with a bit of a Tekkie side. The house that I’m renting came with a small 4x8x1 garden plot that needed some cleaning out at first. After I cleaned it out, I filled in the plot with some compost I got from the local garbage company. They take the green waste and grind it down into a usable soil. After some time, watering it to prep the soil for planting and to compact it down. For planting the plants, I tried to keep them relatively together by needs as it will be helpful later on. For example, the tomatoes are near the top of the picture as they will grow about the same and easier to stake and build a cage for them. Most of my seedlings from my first batch aren’t doing well from mold growth on top of soil due to the set up I had.
I have since upgraded my seed starting box to better one with vents and grow light, see the picture below. Apon changing the box and adding the grow light the mold issue has been resolved and most of my seedling have sported from the second batch. I’m continuing to monitor the first that I had planted they are still looking like baby’s weeks late. The pumpkin seeds sported within a week and everything else has followed shortly after.
The pumpkin seedlings quickly need to replant to a bigger container as I didn’t have a spot set up for them yet and that will come the additional 4x8x1 section of raised gardening bed for them and other plants that I’m looking at getting for it. I’m planning on growing all of my own food that I normally get from the store to help with cost, and it will taste better in the end. Plus, there is something about growing your own food.
